CAM User Experience within a CAD Environment

Recognizing the fact that SOLIDWORKS is a widely used CAD software, a client wanted to extend the integration of their product to reach a broader community of SOLIDWORKS customer base. AMC Bridge developed an add-in to SOLIDWORKS called “Inside Chamfering” that smoothes sharp inside edges of cut‐outs in any solid model by simulating the process of chamfering sharp inside edges by a ball mill.

SysCam GmbH is a service provider offering solutions for Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Aided Design (CAD), located in Germany.

FeatureCAM is the SysCAM’s flagship software, which employs an innovative feature-based approach to automating machining process and minimizing programming time for generating NC Code.

FeatureCAM is a universal CAM application designed to work with various CAD applications and formats. Recognizing the fact that SOLIDWORKS is widely used mainstream CAD software, SysCAM decided to extend the integration of FeatureCAM with SOLIDWORKS, to reach a broader community of SOLIDWORKS customer base.

Although SysCAM had a variety of software development skills in house, a help of an experienced development resources with an intimate knowledge of SOLIDWORKS API was required to produce the desired integration with SOLIDWORKS at the required time-to-market speed. To ensure efficient and timely delivery of the product, SysCAM turned to the SOLIDWORKS API expert - AMC Bridge.

The application, developed by AMC Bridge for SysCAM, is an add-in to SOLIDWORKS called “Inside Chamfering” that smoothes sharp inside edges of cut‐outs in any solid model by simulating the process of chamfering sharp inside edges by a ball mill. The user can select any edge on a model loaded in SOLIDWORKS session and the add‐in will calculate the appropriate toolpath for the ball mill. The model can either be a native SOLIDWORKS part or imported body from a 3rd party format.

The User Interface (UI) of the add‐in was designed to follow the native SOLIDWORKS look and feel, to make it easier for SOLIDWORKS users to learn and adopt the new functionality.

AMC Bridge provided SysCAM with a fully functioning add‐in that enabled the company to penetrate SOLIDWORKS customer base. Outsourcing the project development to AMC Bridge enabled SysCAM to significantly reduce time‐to‐market without compromising on the quality of the software.
