In the Beginning

Founded in 1983, CNC Software is one of the oldest companies in the PC-based CAD/CAM industry. The company was built on the concept of providing an inexpensive PC-based CAM system at a time when most other systems were expensive CAD-oriented products. CNC Software was one of the first companies to introduce CAD/CAM software designed for both the machinist and the engineer, providing a practical solution to both markets. While the original version of Mastercam focused on two-dimensional (2D) CAM, it was also one of the first micro-based CAM packages to include CAD capabilities. With Mastercam, the engineer could construct his or her own parts quickly and easily as well as machine them, for an affordable price.

CNC Software Today

Shortly after CNC Software got its start in Massachusetts, the company moved its base of operation to an office in Vernon, Connecticut. Today, the CNC Software, Inc. corporate headquarters and training facility is located in a company- owned 53,000 sq. ft. environmentally friendly building in Tolland, Connecticut. In addition to over 140 employees working at the corporate facility, CNC Software also has an office in the state of Washington dedicated to the educational market. The real backbone of the over 150,000 installation-strong Mastercam community is our global reseller network. Some of these experts have been with CNC Software since the very beginning. They've helped build shops from the ground up, and have developed a true "partnership" with our customers, offering advice, strategy, and experience to Mastercam users around the world.

Making the World More Efficient

When a buyer finds the right supplier, that buyer is able to get their production done more competitively than by traditional methods where the odds of finding the right supplier at the precise moment you need them, is very low. Conversely, when a supplier finds a buyer that buys the services they sell, they are able to provide the buyer with competitive pricing and still make a profit because they found the type of work and customer that is in their “sweet spot”. It is nearly impossible for the supplier to find a steady stream of the right customers by traditional sales and marketing methods.

The Right Idea at the Right Moment in Time

Our founder and CEO, Mitch Free, started his career as a machinist with a passion for manufacturing, technology and business.  In 1999 he was driving in Atlanta, GA and heard a commercial on the radio for LendingTree.com with their tagline "request your mortgage and let lenders compete".  That was a eureka moment for Mitch as he thought "what if I wanted something manufactured and I wanted job shops and factories to compete" and MFG.com was born.

In 1975 Microsoft was an unknown software company with a single product and the promise of delivering on a new way of computing.

Company History

David Ferguson - Founder and original software developer, David Ferguson was born into the manufacturing family by virtue of his father, owner/operator of a fabrication job shop that is still in operations today. Now, with over 25 years experience, first working in and then writing software for the fabrication industry, David is considered as an expert in the job shop arena. A sought after speaker, he has consulted with numerous manufacturing companies around the globe, guiding them to become more efficient and cost effective.

In the early 80’s, David created and sold his first computer program, Arrow Data Systems, which was a CAD/CAM system for the Apple IIe Computer. In the mid 80’s, after seeing his father come home late at night only to begin the estimating process, David saw an opportunity to automate the estimating process through computer technology … The “Quote It” estimating package was born, becoming one of the leading sheet metal estimating packages in the world. Shortly thereafter, David developed the FabriTRAK Production Control Package and through the years it was licensed to both METALSOFT and Amada America.

By the end of 2007 David Ferguson had taken back control of all FabriTRAK licensing agreements, completely re-wrote its production control offering and launched MIE Trak Pro (a state-of-the-art ERP system that is ideal for manufacturing businesses, with modules designed to accommodate most production cycles and optimize the capabilities of repetitive, custom, quick-turn and mixed mode operations) and, together with Don Clutter launched MIE Solutions.

Since its inception MIE Solutions has grown over 500 percent and, in addition to having North America sales and support locations, has offices in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and United Kingdom.

ModuleWorks provides software components for complex CNC machine motions which require sophisticated algorithms, which are integrated as core components in a CAD/CAM software package.

Most CAD/CAM vendors do not develop these complex algorithms themselves, but instead they rely on the core components developed by ModuleWorks.
