The concept of a Digital twin means something different in each environment. Often it’s as simple as a real-time representation of what’s happening with physical assets, and in other cases, it is much more complex. Industrial robotics simulation is one of the most effective solutions to eliminate costly design mistakes that can often be discovered only in the late stages of the production workflow.
One of the leading vendors of the complex robotic systems challenged its software development group to enhance the company’s equipment with advanced software applications and AMC Bridge joined the group to develop a desktop application of a prototype simulator that enables robot teaching and simulates operations of robot systems for Hirata, an international production engineering company based in Japan.
Simulation process itself is a complex mathematical task, which requires significant computational hardware resources that are difficult and expensive to maintain. It creates a high barrier of entry for companies that do not possess resources to establish and maintain powerful data centers / computer clusters. It also makes it more difficult to establish the trial and short-term engagements, in order to convince future customers to move to the full implementations.
To model these microscopic scenarios in the brain the Laboratory has developed a program that runs on MATLAB. That approach worked well in the early stages of the project, but when it came time to run the simulation on a more realistic set of data with an expanded arena, the limitations of MATLAB became apparent. MATLAB is an efficient environment for quick prototype development, but lacks the capabilities of lower-level programming languages for performance optimization, data management and distributed computing. The researchers realized that they needed a more powerful software tool, but did not have the in-house programming skills to develop one.
